Messaging services such as WhatsApp have been the number one communication channel in private life for many years. However, due to data protection requirements, such solutions are not suitable for medical use. Now, x-tention and Famedly are ushering in a new era of efficient and secure communication in healthcare. Together, we offer the gematik‑approved TI Messenger.
Messaging for healthcare
Messaging has long been established in both private and professional life in Germany. In a consumer survey conducted by the Federal Network Agency, 88% of respondents stated in 2022 that they regularly use online communication services. However, current solutions and apps are only of very limited suitability for healthcare. Most fail to meet GDPR requirements, while specialised solutions often struggle with a lack of interoperability and proprietary interfaces.
According to a study by the European Society of Cardiology, around 80% of surveyed doctors still used WhatsApp to share patient‑related data in 2022. With our TI Messenger, this figure should decrease significantly. A new era of secure and convenient communication in healthcare.
Sections 312 and 342 of the German Social Code Book V (SGB V) define the legal framework for messaging in healthcare – §312 for healthcare providers and §342 for payers and insured individuals. Based on this framework, gematik, the National Agency for Digital Medicine, has defined a roadmap for introducing the TI Messenger in three product variants. It also provides the necessary specifications, based on the open‑source Matrix protocol.
Level 1, TI‑M Pro, with go‑live in 2024, enables secure, cross‑sector ad‑hoc communication between healthcare professionals.
Level 2, TI‑M ePA (go‑live in July 2025), extends messaging to include insured individuals, patients and health insurance providers.
With the third product variant, TI‑M Connect (date to be announced), the integration of value‑added services – such as video consultations – as well as process integration and automation – for example integration into a patient portal – will become possible.
