The “Curamenta” patient portal, a secure and professional service for people with mental illnesses, was launched in September 2022. The three-tiered healthcare platform provides information on symptoms, diagnosis and treatment processes at curamenta.de, while a specially protected personalized area contains extensive functionality for digitally supported treatment.

The platform’s launch followed a one-year development phase. As well as collaborating on the concept work, x-tention focused on the UI/UX design of the interfaces, the development and implementation of the backend, plus the integration into existing systems. The x-tention group has been operating the patient portal since it went live. It also provides user support. The platform is funded by the four public hospital associations, Vitos (Hessen), LVR (Rhineland Regional Council), LWL (Regional Council of Westphalia-Lippe) and kbo (Clinics of Upper Bavaria), which together treat over 650,000 patients annually in Bavaria, Hessen, and North Rhine Westphalia. Under the auspices of the GDG (Non-Profit Society for Digital Health), the partners are working together to shape the digital transformation in mental healthcare.

Curamenta – the mental health portal

The patient portal is for people with mental health issues, their loved ones, and anyone else who wants to find out more about mental health. Comprehensive information on the most common conditions and their diagnosis and treatment options is available in the public area. All content is also available in a plain language version. Once users have registered and logged in to Curamenta, can use the forum and join discussions. The portal also provides further information on treatment facilities and contact addresses and offers support in managing appointments, for instance for an initial examination.

Users who have been approved as patients can benefit from the whole range of Curamenta functions. From their personal dashboard, they can access all their files, share them with treatment providers or fill in questionnaires right there in the portal. In addition, they can send direct messages to their service providers, schedule appointments or involve loved ones in the treatment process. The online service includes a diary and note function and new features are being added all the time.

Functions go far beyond KHZG requirements

Curamenta has a wide range of value-adding features that take the pressure off service providers and hospital management, streamline processes and go beyond the obligatory and nice-to-have criteria of the KHZG (German Hospital Future Act). The digital portal is based on the Orchestra eHealth Suite. It offers accounting and onboarding functions, plus precise authorization and approval management. The integrated patient record allows you to store all the personal and medical data that is generated. Structured data is exchanged via HL7 FHIR. Service providers can use the form designer to create their own forms for gathering and storing information. The well-designed appointment organiser for coordinating appointments and the secure messaging app from x-tention partner, Famedly, which can also be used by whole teams or therapy groups, are equally useful to patients and treatment providers.

x-tention has been operating the Curamenta healthcare platform since its launch in September. At the same time it supports Curamenta by providing extensive data protection and IT security services. It also takes care of monitoring during operations. A multi-level support set-up is available around the clock for questions and any issues that arise during use. The healthcare platform was seamlessly integrated into the participating hospitals’ existing systems before it went live, and hospital staff were trained in how to use Curamenta.
